All Things Ashwagandha: Benefits and Uses

By Kayla Ehrenberger, PharmD Candidate

Let’s face it, life can get busy and overwhelming at times, and with that comes stress. When we become stressed, our body goes into “fight or flight” mode. This is a natural response that occurs when we are in danger. You can think of it as if you were being chased by a bear; Your body will increase your blood pressure and energy supply, among other things, to allow you to safely escape the danger. A chemical called cortisol is released during this event to allow these processes to occur.

Although our stressors may look different today, such as a looming work deadline or a conflict in a personal relationship, our body still reacts in the same way. Unfortunately, elevated levels of cortisol contribute to feelings of anxiety. There are both lifestyle modifications and natural supplements such as ashwagandha that can help with managing these symptoms.

Lifestyle modifications for stress:

  • Improving sleep quality can regulate secretion of cortisol. Studies show that lack of sleep causes an increase of cortisol production throughout the day, leading to an increase in anxiety.
  • Meditation has been shown to decrease cortisol levels and therefore decrease overall feelings of stress. Research suggests that regular mindful meditation has shown the most benefit in reduction of stress.
  • Exercising can decrease cortisol levels and help to regulate abnormal cortisol responses in times of stress.

Ashwagandha, an ancient herb, has been widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, it is recognized for its adaptogenic properties and its ability to promote a sense of well-being. Ashwagandha has been traditionally used to help manage stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and enhance cognitive function. The herb is believed to work by regulating the body's response to stress and anxiety.

Today, ashwagandha continues to gain popularity as a natural remedy for stress-related conditions, with its extract being incorporated into various supplements and herbal formulations aimed at promoting relaxation and reducing the effects of stress on the mind and body.
